There are number of facilities and resources available at Nims University & Medical College to conduct high-end ground-breaking research. Some of these include having a world-class library with all national and international journals, periodicals, books, manuscripts and other published or unpublished reference material. The library has got the most modern infra with all facilities and 24x7 opening hours. Researchers can go and study there for any length of time to conduct a literature search in the field of their research. Nims University is a multi-disciplinary University and is a perfect place for conducing multi-disciplinary research which is the way to conduct the real research. We also have a state of the art Institute of Pharmacy with a fully operational Animal House to conduct the research in animal models. Nims also have a fully registered Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) and all projects must be approved through that. 
 

Clinical Audit

Audit is a process of systematic analysis of your own work, processes, guidelines, results or data and its methodical comparision with the existing Gold Standards. The basic concept of a clinical audit is to find the flaws and deviations in your system by comparing it with existing Gold Standards in that field. This can be a comparison of exiting guidelines, local practices, personal prererences, local policies with that of set protocols in order to find out deviations and its impact. This is done by retrieving the relevant records from the MRD department in Nims Hospital. The records are then summoned by the relevant clinicians who want to conduct the audit and the committe analyses the notes based on the pre-decided criteria for the Audit. The relevant paratemters are collected and then analysis performed followed by their comparision with the existing gold standards. The final statistical analysis is performed by by the relevant statistical tools. 

The audits are done in the following stages:

1. Identify topic
The topic must be an important issue as it underpins the entire audit. Examples of important issues include those that are high-risk for patients, high costs for the trust, areas of patient concern (which could have been collected from a survey) or areas of high volume workload. It is also necessary to register the proposed audit with the Local Clinical Audit Team and have it approved by the relevant Audit Lead.
2. Select the standards
Select an established guideline (national or international) that is considered best-practice. Often the Royal College websites for different specialities have existing audit templates that are very useful. Extract the necessary targets from these guidelines (e.g. 100% of patients should be offered smoking cessation).
3. Data collection
This can be retrospective or prospective. It may be beneficial to do this retrospectively to prevent performance bias from staff members that are aware of any prospective audit. Additionally, data can be collected from physical or computer records.
4. Data analysis
Analyse the collected data and assess whether local practice meets guideline standards. Explore how well the standards were met and discuss any reasons for low compliance.
5. Implement change
Present the results at local departmental meetings and possibly at local or regional conferences. Develop an action plan outlining what needs to be done and then create these changes!
6. Allow time for changes to take place
It is important to allow sufficient time to pass for the uptake of new changes. Auditing too soon may underestimate the impact of new interventions, as they have not had time to take full effect.
7. Re-audit
Conduct the audit again to assess whether practice has improved in light of changes from the previous audit
